A New D&D Game Is Coming… And It’s Not What You’d Expect

Related Articles

So, guess what I heard while eavesdropping on a couple of traders over mugs of cider and dice games? There’s a brand-new Dungeons & Dragons video game on the way—but this one’s not crawling out of a mimic chest with a turn-based scroll under its arm. Nope. It’s leaping in with a blade in one hand and a wall-run in the other.

This next D&D title isn’t coming from the minds behind Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, it’s being crafted by a new studio called Giant Skull, founded by Stig Asmussen—yeah, the fella who directed God of War III and the Star Wars Jedi games. If that doesn’t get your rogue senses tingling, I don’t know what will.

A Leap from Strategy to Action

Now hold on—before you scream sacrilege, hear me out. Unlike the slow-burn tactical brilliance of Baldur’s Gate 3, this new D&D adventure will be a single-player action-adventure game. Think sword-slinging, spell-dodging, and maybe some death-defying traversal across a crumbling dungeon bridge. It’ll be running on Unreal Engine 5, so expect it to look sharper than a bard’s insults.

No release date yet, but it’s bound for PC and consoles. That’s right, this one’s for the adventurer who wants to move fast, hit hard, and look good doing it.

Who’s Behind the Magic?

Stig Asmussen has a knack for turning epic fantasies into heart-pounding action. He was the director behind Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor—games where wall-running, lightsaber duels, and massive set pieces were just part of the day job.

Now, he’s setting his sights on the world of Dungeons & Dragons. He says he wants to create a “rich universe of fantasy and adventure built around a deeply engaging story, fast-paced combat, and a world that rewards exploration.” Sounds like he’s speaking my language.

Why Not More Baldur’s Gate?

You’re probably wondering: “Wait—where’s Baldur’s Gate 4?” Well, turns out Larian Studios (the folks who made BG3) are moving on. No sequel, no DLC. Wizards of the Coast decided to try a new path through the dungeon, and it looks like Giant Skull is leading the next expedition.

Honestly? I’m curious. It’s a bold step, and bold steps make for the best stories.

When Will We Know More?

Word is we’ll get a sneak peek at this new D&D game during a panel at Summer Game Fest on June 9. If you hear shouting from the rooftops around that date, it’s probably me.

Until then, keep your daggers sharp and your mind open. The realm’s shifting again—and this time, it might be leaping over ledges and slicing through skeletons at full speed.
